The opening IWS concert of the 2011-2012 season commemorates the sesquicentennial of the Civil War with Aaron Copland’s stirring Lincoln Portrait, narrated by WISH-TV anchor Eric Halvorson, as well as with pieces featuring melodies familiar to those involved in both sides of the struggle. This includes Donald Grantham's Southern Harmony, winner of the prestigious Ostwald Award for best new band composition of 1997, which is based on popular hymn tunes of the mid-1800s.

James Barnes’ new Symphony No. 7 will highlight the second half of the concert.
